Israel is crossing its borders in a way that pleases no one
The top US diplomat said he was "disappointed" by Israel's announcement of the construction of 3,000 new homes in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Blinken said during a press conference in Buenos Aires that the long-standing US policy is that new settlements are counterproductive to achieving a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
It is also contrary to international law". "Our administration maintains a strong opposition to settlement expansion, and from our point of view, this only weakens, not enhances, Israel's security," he said.
In November 2019, Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Washington no longer views Israeli settlements on West Bank lands captured in the 1967 Middle East war as "contrary to international law", a reflection of four decades of American policy.
Months later in January 2020, the Trump administration announced a peace plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which was adopted by Israel and rejected by the Palestinians, partly because it gave Israel most of what it sought during decades of conflict, including almost all the occupied territories on which settlements were built.
The administration of President Joe Biden has opposed further settlement expansion, saying it is counterproductive to lasting peace, but Friday was the first time a U.S. official said the practice was not in accordance with international law.
The US administration recently imposed sanctions on four Israeli men accused of involvement in settler violence, but continued to provide weapons and funding to the Israeli government, despite its crimes and this is provocative
The Palestinians and the international community consider the transfer of civilians of any country to the occupied territories illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 and UN Security Council resolutions.
Israeli and Palestinian estimates indicate that about 650,000 settlers live in 164 settlements and 116 outposts in the occupied West Bank.
Under international law, all Jewish settlements in the Occupied Palestinian territories are considered illegal.
The Palestinians accuse Israel of systematically working to Judaize East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, and blur its Arab and Islamic identity.
For Muslims, Al-Aqsa represents the third holiest site in the world. The Jews, for their part, call the area the Temple Mount, saying that it was the site of two synagogues in ancient times.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The entire city was annexed in 1980, in a move that was not recognized by the international community.
The United States has come under increasing pressure for its unwavering support for Israel, which has killed nearly 30,000 Palestinians – mostly women and children – and razed the besieged Gaza Strip to the ground, impeding the delivery of humanitarian supplies, amid an ongoing humanitarian disaster.
Blinken responded on Thursday to criticism that the United States is alone in its approach to Israel's war on Gaza, saying "we all share the same goals."
"Everyone wants to see an end to this conflict as soon as possible,"Blinken said during a press conference in Brazil in response to a question about the isolation of the United States due to its support for Israel and the veto of UN Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire for the third time.
"I think we are all united in the desire to see after Gaza the path to a truly lasting and sustainable peace,"he said.
The United States on Tuesday vetoed the latest attempt at the UN Security Council to demand an immediate ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip, where the official death toll is rapidly approaching 30,000.
The draft resolution, sponsored by Algeria, received widespread support in the council, with 13 out of 15 member states voting in favour. The United States was the only country that voted against it, and as a permanent member of the council, its opposition killed the resolution. The United Kingdom, another permanent member, abstained in the voting.
"We are intensely focused on trying to reach an agreement that will lead to the release of the remaining hostages and result in an extended humanitarian ceasefire. And again, these are the goals that I think almost everyone in the G20 shares".
Blinken was speaking in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he is attending the G20 foreign ministers meeting, where he held several bilateral meetings, including with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva amid disagreements over Israel's war on the Gaza Strip.
The meeting came after Lula compared the Israeli war on Gaza to Adolf Hitler's Holocaust against the Jews, saying "what is happening in the Gaza Strip is not a war, it's a genocide."
"We strongly disagree," Blinken said when asked about Lula's statements, adding that " it's something friends do too."
"We can have these disagreements, even deep disagreements on a particular issue, or I must even say one side of the issue and continue all the vital work that we are doing together,"he said.
