The message of King Charles to Ukraine

King Charles issued a strongly worded message of support for Ukraine, in a statement on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion.

He spoke about the "indescribable aggression" that the Ukrainians have faced since what they called "justified on their land".

The message seems to be unusually direct and is a rallying call for continued international assistance to Ukraine.

The King welcomed the continued support of the United Kingdom and its allies.

At a time when there were some doubts about financial and military assistance to Ukraine, especially from some politicians in the United States, King Charles praised international support for Ukraine at a time of "great suffering and need".

King Charles spoke about the military training that is being provided in the UK to Ukrainian soldiers and praised the efforts of the country's President Zelensky.

With the entry into the war in the third year, the King's sympathy did not diminish, praising the "determination and strength of the Ukrainian people".

"Despite the enormous hardship and pain inflicted on them, the Ukrainians continue to demonstrate the heroism with which the world closely associates them. "They have real courage, in the face of unspeakable aggression,"the King said in a statement.

The war in Ukraine was close to the King's heart. In the early stages of the conflict he made a surprise visit to Ukrainian refugees who had fled across the border to Romania.

Having visited the Ukrainian community in the UK and on a state visit to France last year, the monarch told the Senate about the importance of Ukraine's victory against the "terrible" Russian invasion, so that "our cherished freedoms prevail".

It is unusual for the monarch to speak unequivocally about an international conflict and his comments reflect the strength of his feeling.
